PEOPLE killed in Eeastern DRC

Kinshasa - Nineteen civilians have been killed since December 17 in the strife-torn east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where villages have been torched, several sources said on Monday.

On December 17 and 18, 15 civilians from three families, including women and children, were killed in villages on the Masisi territory in Nord-Kivu province, said a local lawmaker, Nephtali Nkizinkiko.

These killings took place while Congolese army (FARDC) troops were chasing deserters from the National Congress of the Defence of the People (CNDP), a former rebel force that had rallied to the army, Nkizinkiko added.

An unknown number of villagers disappeared during these clashes.

Reached by telephone by AFP, another local member of parliament said that at least four people had been killed by CNDP forces in villages on the Masisi territory since December 24.

"They halt people on the tracks and steal their possessions," said this source, who asked not to be named.

At the beginning of December, more than 150 ex-rebels of the CNDP, led by Colonel Emmanuel Sengiyumva, deserted from the ranks of the FARDC, headed for an unknown destination.

Since then, they have attacked the army and civilians in this region on the border with Rwanda, where several armed groups are active. - Sapa-AFP
